Kozani is the capital of the regional unit of Kozani and region of West Makedonia. It is located between Bourinos, Vermio and Pieria mountains. It’s a 1.5 hour drive from Thessaloniki and 1.5 hour drive to Ioannina. About 41.000 people live here. The city’s climate is continental with cold winters, and hot summers.
Kozani is most famous for its carnival about 50 days before Orthodox Easter each year. People gather around bonfires and dance with traditional local outfits. This tradition goes way before Kozani was free, in Ancient Greeks times when people drank wine and danced around the bonfires worshiping the god Dionisos. People also go out disguised, like in Halloween.
Kozani’s Municipal Library named Kovedarios is the second biggest library in Greece after the library of Athens.
The tall clock tower and the old church of Saint Nikolaos, build in 1664 can be found on the central square Niki.
In September, the local Commercial Exhibition takes place in Exhibition Centre in Kila village Kozani where merchants promote local products.
Kozani’s favourite treats are giaprakia (meat and rice rolled in cabbage and kihi like tyropita but rolled.
If one just simply wants to take a walk, he can do so in the big garden called Kipos, just next to Kozani’s Odeum (music school) and also go on picnic there, or admire the beautiful flowers and colourful fountains.
